Week 5
In this week's reading, President James E. Faust talked about perseverance. There was a lot of talk about whether entrepreneurs are born with the talents to become successful or if it more based on the skills and hard work that you put into it. I think it was decided that the latter was true. President Faust talked a lot about how when you fall down, you must get up. I know that for me, all of the talents I have had naturally have withered away or would have if I didn't practice them. I also think that it mattered less about what I was good at in the end, and more about what I was passionate about and willing to work for. That has by far mattered more than anything else. Having grit matters. I think it's also important to bled what you are good at with what you are meant to do in order to help people. There was a discussion about the blend of matching your talents with passions and your passions with available opportunities that make sense.
One thing that really struck me in the reading was the importance of being a good salesperson. My grandfather was a shoe salesman and he was amazing at it but I am not. This is a very practical need and not something I am naturally gifted at. I am not great at "selling" to people in a traditional way especially to groups but I have become better and making my points known and selling in different ways, being aware of the unique way to sell in this day and age through technology. I thought of the many stories this week where people overcame what they weren't good at, and leaned on other professionals for help in the areas they needed work on. This really impressed me. t I may have to be willing to sell my passion and the business I seek after and be good with people in order to be ultimately successful. It's not something I can shy away from but it is something I can overcome.
