Week 7

Passion vs. Money

This week I studied about having a passion for something regardless of money. I think this is an interesting topic because it's easy to say, and hard to accept. The world is all about money and perception and what people are seeing and that's not what life is about but it is a part of our existence. It is hard to not compare to others success or to constantly feel that your worth is not determined by what you can provide to yourself or your family. It is a chronic problem for so many in this world, including me and you can't just ignore money. It's how you survive so I do think that in order to be happy, you have to really accept with both eyes open before making the decision to start a business or follow that passion, that things might not financially go how you want and that you may need to work a job in order to live your passion and thats okay. 

Guy Kawasaki talked about Passions vs. Money in his Youtube video.1 He talked about that you will change the world and you might have money but you can change the world. It's better to seek changing the world and then have the optimistic belief that you can find a way to make money. He shared that even when he got rich, he still really wanted to be somewhere else and have less to worry about. He talked about how it was more carefree when he was a student and when he was a student, he couldn't wait to be rich. The point, I suppose is that - money doesn't make you happy. It just gets you to the next place and so focusing on what your passion is and if you can do it no matter what - that will set you up for a greater life. Your passion also should be something that will help the world in the end.

     This week I was introduced to the purpose of my Intro to Entrepreneurship course. Many of the videos and the articles that I was assigned to read were talking about believing in oneself and being empowered to make a difference while still being balanced in the things that matter most. Week 12

      As I listened to the article, "What's a Business for?" by Charles Handy. He discussed capitalism, our economy, and the importance for virtue and integrity. He even shared that integrity directly affects the economy. The real justification for the existence of businesses was "something" and investors don't care. He talked about "the American disease" because business was "the key engine of progress" but things have changed and some things were neglected. It has become very self-consumed according to Handy. Everything from education, healthcare, and food, and housing is involved. Everyone is playing a game with rules that are fed by fraud and only profitability. It's not necessarily better for everyone. Buying businesses or stock market focus is now a huge way to steal back from share holders. This was an eye-opening article for me. It was bold and straight forward.
